NEWARK, N.J. — A second person has been arrested in Newark after one of them allegedly pointed a gun at police officers on patrol, authorities said Tuesday.

Two loaded guns were found in the search and three officers were involved in the initial encounter, police said.

It began overnight near North 11th Street and Fourth Avenue.

The officers were patrolling the neighborhood when they came across two men, one of whom appeared to point a gun at the officers, according to Anthony Ambrose, the chief of investigators with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

He said the officers opened fire and it initially appeared that there was a trail of blood in the area. However, police said Tuesday morning that no one was struck by the gunfire.

One man was arrested overnight and the other was taken into custody as of 8 a.m., police said.

Ambrose said the officers were not hurt.
