MONROE, N.Y. — An off-duty NYPD officer is in serious condition after he was ejected from his car Sunday night during a crash on the New York State Thruway, police said.

The officer — identified as Alexis Penate, 32 — was driving near Exit 16 in Kiryas Joel when his 2015 Jeep Wrangler rear-ended the car in front of him before losing control and rolling over, said Trooper David Howard, a state police spokesman.

He was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with serious head and internal injuries, officials said. The officer was listed in serious but stable condition.

New York State Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The NYPD has been notified about the collision.
