Health organizations say processed meats can cause cancer

MANHATTAN - "Not a good day for a bacon lover," is how Dr. Marleen Meyers summed up a scathing report released by the World Health Organization that states the consumption of slightly less than two slices of bacon daily increased the chances of developing colorectal cancer by 18%. "This is not really new news, but it really is dramatically put," said Dr. Meyers in-between patients at NYU Langone's Perimutter Cancer Center in midtown.

Dr. Meyers has seen the pendulum swing on several occasions regarding diet and cancer during her 35-years of practice and while the report suggests cutting back on processed meats as well as red meats, it also states that there are nutritional values in meat. One other significant point to take into consideration according to Dr. Meyers, the habits and tendencies of some meat eaters, "Red meat may not be the issue, but it could be that red meat lovers are also not vegetable lovers. They are not eating enough fibers, enough micronutrients, enough anti-oxidants that come with good fruits and vegetables."

Meanwhile PIX 11 News came across a different kind of MD at Ottomanelli Brothers in Greenwhich Village, "I am an MD! Meat dealer," said Frank Ottomanelli. The 71-year-old has has been working at the famed butcher shop since the days that a WWII hero was President, "Eisenhower. I'm pretty sure it was Ike."

While Frank was showing off some of the quality meats that has made his father's butcher shop legendary, he did offer up a humorous take as to who may have been behind the report, "I think the fish people had something to do with this."

Meanwhile, his son Matthew -- who has worked beside his father since he was old enough to walk around the shop --- is expecting this to have an impact on the way he brings home the bacon, "It's going to hurt the clientele business, it's going to hurt everybody until they look into it and see how much they have to eat to be affected." However, Matthew also adds, that bacon is one of those things that appeases the palate in a way that only few things can, "Bacon is great. I don't think people are going to steer away from bacon. Everything is better with bacon."
