HARLEM — The Breakin' Convention Festival is under way at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.

"It's wonderful to see an art form that was born here, really celebrated on a global level, back in the community it started in," said Jamilla Deria, Program Director for the Apollo Theater.

The Breakin' Convention ran through Sunday and features free performances on 125th Street, graffiti lessons, breakdancing workshops and shows on the Apollo Mainstage.

Violeta Galagarza of Spanish Harlem danced during a free-style workshop Friday evening.

"I was dancing with my son, it's like a battle right there, I gotta show him that I still got it," Galagarza said.

For people like Galagarza — breakdancing is a way of life, she told PIX 11.

"When you start dancing you become somebody else."
