Newark police charge 14-year-old in murder of taxi driver

NEWARK, N.J. — A 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in the death of a cab driver in Newark.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced the charges Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting. Rodrigo Berru, 45, was gunned down on Aug. 21 on Frelinghuyson Avenue in Newark.

The teen, who is from Newark, was charged with the murder as well as felony murder, conspiracy, robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Police say the teen was also charged in a separate carjacking incident along with another 14-year-old days before.

The names of the teenagers have not been released due to their ages. They are currently at the Essex County Youth House.
