MARINER'S HARBOR, Staten Island – One man died and five others were hurt in an overnight fire in Staten Island after flames from a candle spread to the rest of the home.

Caleb Wilder, 37, was rushing to his mother's second floor apartment on 124 Brabant Street in Staten Island after she called for his help.  According to police sources, a candle ignited inside the woman's apartment and she was attempting to put out the flames herself.  When they became uncontrollable, she shouted to her two sons, who were on the sidewalk below.  Both came rushing to her aid, but the younger son was overcome by smoke and had to be removed to the street where the family waited for EMS.

Wilder had gone into cardiac arrest and despite paramedics' efforts to revive him, he succumbed to his injuries.  Five other friends and family also at the apartment when the flames broke out shortly before midnight were transported to Richmond University Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The official inquiry into the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
