STATEN ISLAND – A 16-year-old boy died Friday afternoon after falling down an elevator shaft in Staten Island.

Marcos Castillo, 16, was rushed to the hospital after falling around 4:30 p.m. inside an abandoned hospital building at 101 Castleton Avenue, according to police. The boy was allegedly playing cops and robbers with four of his friends when he fell.

The building used to house Staten Island Island Hospital, which closed its doors in 1979, moving from Thompkinsville to Ocean Breeze.  Several fires have broken out inside the abandoned building since it closed, most recently in June of this year.  At least two of the fires were deemed suspicious by investigators.

Neighbors told PIX11 News that they have been waiting for the building to be torn down for years.
