SMITHTOWN, N.Y. — Police say a prisoner escaped from a Long Island hospital and stole an ambulance before crashing it.

It happened around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Suffolk County police said the woman had been in custody at St. Catherine of Sienna Medical Center in Smithtown when she apparently escaped.

After making her way out of the hospital, she hopped into an ambulance and took off.

They say she led officers on a short pursuit before crashing the stolen ambulance nearby.

Police did not say what prompted the woman’s initial arrested.

The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was brought back to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
