WHITE PINE, Tenn. — An 11-year-old boy in Tennessee shot and killed an 8-year-old girl over an argument about a puppy, WBIR reports.

White Pine Police Department and Jefferson County EMS responded to Robin Road around 7:30 p.m. Friday to find the young girl with a gunshot wound to her chest.

She was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Authorities say the girl’s 11-year-old neighbor used his father’s 12-gauge single-shot shotgun to shoot and kill her from inside his house.

Neighbors say the children were arguing about a puppy prior to the shooting. Police have not released an official motive for the shooting.

“Wanting to see a puppy, the little girl laughed and told him no, and that was it,” neighbor Chasity Arwood said.

Officials have not released the name of the shooter or the victim, but neighbors identified the victim as Maykayla Dyer.

The boy was charged with first-degree murder in juvenile court and is in custody.
