Two dead, three others rescued after boat capsizes in Jamaica Bay

JAMAICA BAY — Two people are dead and three other men in the hospital after a boat capsized in Jamaica Bay Friday evening.

According to NYPD, a man alerted an officer at Floyd Bennet Field to the capsized boat in Jamaica Bay at 7:46 p.m. The officer alerted NYPD Aviation, ESU, and Harbor Patrol. FDNY also responded with an air sea rescue.

NYPD reports that five people were on the boat when it capsized. Two people were able to swim to shore. One man was clinging to the overturned boat for a short time before being rescued by the NYPD harbor boat.

These three men , aged 48, 33 and 37, were taken to Coney Island Hospital and are in stable condition. Officials report they are in good condition as of Friday night.

Two other men, ages 42 and 50, were taken to Mount Sinai Brooklyn Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

50-year-old Joel Ortiz of Flatbush, Brooklyn was one of the men killed Friday night. In a family handout, he is pictured smiling on the  boat that capsized.

A coastal flood advisory was still in effect for Jamaica Bay Friday night.
