LOS ANGELES — A father who tossed his 4-year-old daughter to her death off a Southern California seaside cliff was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole, nearly 15 years after the girl’s death and three criminal trials.

Cameron Brown's sentence in Los Angeles Superior Court was mandatory after he was convicted of first-degree murder in May.

In November 2000, Brown threw 4-year-old Lauren Sarene Key off Inspiration Point in Rancho Palos Verdes. She plunged 120 feet to her death, prosecutors said.

The little girl was killed during a bitter custody dispute between her parents. A prosecutor said Brown threw her from the cliff because he hated her mother and was tired of paying child support.

Brown's lawyer acknowledged his client was a bad father, but said the girl tripped and fell as she ran toward Inspiration Point in Rancho Palos Verdes.

The case lingered for years as previous juries deadlocked on whether to convict Brown of murder or involuntary manslaughter.
