Police arrest teen wanted for attempted rape on Staten Island

CASTLETON CORNERS, Staten Island — A man has been arrested for trying to rape a woman after breaking into her Staten Island apartment last week, police said.

Shahzaib Akbar, 18, followed a 20-year-old woman into her residence, located in the vicinity of Dongan Avenue and Manor Road, according to the NYPD. He then forced his way into her apartment, groped her and attempted to rape her before she began to scream, resulting in him trying to flee, police said.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where she is in stable condition.

Akbar, who lives on Purdy Avenue, has been charged with sexual abuse and robbery, cops said.
