NEW YORK — Authorities say a New York City police sergeant who was accused of having sex with an underage girl he met online took his own life.

Joel Doseau, 43, was found dead Thursday at his Brooklyn home in an apparent suicide, The New York Times reports.

A family member discovered Doseau’s body when they went to the suspended sergeant’s home to check on him.

Officials say Doseau inhaled gas fumes and appeared to have died from asphyxiation.

Doseau was arrested Aug. 5 and charged with 40 criminal counts in New York Supreme Court, including rape and sexual abuse.

Police say Doseau met the victim online and asked her to send him nude photos when she was 14 years old. They say the two began a three-year sexual relationship when she was 15.
