BROWNSVILLE, Brooklyn — National Night Out events rolled through neighborhoods across our region.

But it’s on blocks like this one here in Brownsville where law enforcement faces an especially difficult task; strengthening community ties while addressing a disconnect between resident’s perception of crime versus the actual crime rate.

Mayor Bill de Blasio urged the crowd to keep its focus on the big picture.

But citywide, murders are up 10 percent compared to last year.

Perception becomes even more of a problem when news spreads of the nearly two dozen people who were shot this past weekend in Brooklyn alone.

Fair or unfair, residents who spoke with PIX11 say they have no problem letting the crime they see and hear about in their lives taint their perception of the NYPD’s performance.
