LONG BEACH, N.Y. — A swimmer who was found submerged in the ocean at Long Beach died Saturday evening, authorities confirmed.

Long Beach police responded to the report of a swimmer in distress at Long Beach around 6:30 p.m. One swimmer was rescued by an off-duty lifeguard.

The swimmer told rescuers his friend was still in the ocean. Multiple agencies searched the area for an hour before finding 23-year-old Kashawn Carlos, of Brooklyn, submerged in the water.

Authorities say the man died at 8:13 p.m. at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside.

At 6 p.m., all the swimmers were ordered out of the ocean when the lifeguards went off duty. Subsequently, police say the man chose to go back in the water and was caught in a rip tide.
