CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — A former school principal pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography Wednesday afternoon.

Kevin O’Connell, 54, of Patchogue entered a guilty plea at a federal courthouse in Central Islip.

O’Connell admitted he downloaded videos of children as young as eight being sexually abused. He kept the videos on a thumb drive in his home. In October, 2012, police searched his home where they located three thumb drives in the pocket of a jacket in his home.

After police made the discovery, O’Connell, who was an assistant superintendent for secondary education in the Roosevelt Union Free School district, was suspended from his job. He had previously been a principal at Bellport Senior High School and a varsity basketball coach for 11 years at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach.

“Charged by profession with caring for children, the defendant instead acted to foster their victimization by receiving numerous images of the abuse of children,” stated Acting United States Attorney Currie.

He faces between five and 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
