NEWARK, N.J. — A father was gunned down outside his home in New Jersey while taking his three young children to day care, authorities said.

Officers were called about 7:40 a.m. Wednesday to the 200 block of South Ninth Street on a report of a shooting, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

When they arrived, they found Hassan W. Scott, 37, unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Scott was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8 a.m., the prosecutor’s office said.

Investigators said Scott was leaving his home to take his children — ages 2, 4 and 9 — to day care when bullets started flying.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined, officials said. No arrests have been made and a description of the culprit or culprits has not been released.

Anyone with information in the case is urged to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force at 1-877-847-7432 or 1-877-TIPS-4-EC.
