BAY SHORE, N.Y. – A Jamaica man was arrested and charged with helping his friend to escape the scene of a fiery crash that claimed the lives of three family members.
Demetri A. Stewart, 23, of Jamaica has been charged with driving his friend Oneil Sharpe away from the scene of the crash where he rear-ended a family near Exit 41 on Southern State Parkway, according to Robert Clifford, a spokesman for the Suffolk County DA.
The father, Ancio Ostane, and his two children, ages 4 and 8, were killed in the crash. The mother, Lucnie Bouaz-Ostane lost her entire immediate family and was the sole survivor of the crash.
Four hours after the crash, at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, State Police found and arrested Sharpe at his mother’s home in Rockville Centre. Sharpe was driving his mother’s BMW when he allegedly rear-ended the Ostane’s Toyota in the fiery crash.
Stewart pleaded not guilty to three charges: leaving the scene of a fatal accident, hindering prosecution and criminal facilitation. His friend Sharpe also pleaded not guilty to his charges of DWI and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. They are both being held at Suffolk County jail.
