EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — A collision between a sedan and a tractor-trailer on a New Jersey highway Monday morning tore apart the smaller vehicle, crushing its hood and sending its engine flying across a grassy divide and two lanes of traffic.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes of Route 3 near the Meadowlands. The engine of the sedan landed in the westbound lanes, according to aerial footage of the scene.

An ambulance was parked near the crushed sedan. It was not immediately known how many people were hurt in the crash or the extent of their injuries.

As of 7:45 a.m., all westbound lanes had been reopened but the eastbound lanes of Route 3 remained shut down back to Route 21. Drivers heading east are being diverted off the highway at Exit 120, about a mile away from the crash scene.
