Man, 41, dies after crashing car into tree in Queens: police

SPRINGFIELD GARDENS, Queens – A 41-year-old man was killed after he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree Queens Sunday afternoon, according to the NYPD.

Police said Troy Smith of Queens was driving a 2010 Hyundai sedan westbound on the North Conduit at an unsafe speed when it hit a right hand side curb and mounted the sidewalk. The vehicle began to slide sideways and struck a tree in front of 159-07 North Conduit Ave. around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The impact was so severe that it trapped the driver inside, killing him instantly, cops said.

Witnesses said North Conduit Avenue is a popular route for speeders.

"They need speed bumps out here man," a distraught neighbor said. "I have kids. I don't want my kids out here."
