CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — A man and a woman have been arrested in the June stabbing death of a teen who was killed during an especially violent few hours in Crown Heights that saw another young man killed just a block away from where the stabbing victim was slain.

Police on Wednesday said Jermaine Matthews, 18, and Donasia Vassell, 20, were arrested in the death of 17-year-old John Garrett.

Both suspects face charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Vassell also faces a charge of criminal facilitation, police said.

Officers were called about 11:30 p.m. June 10 to 1063 Eastern Parkway to find Garrett stabbed in the torso, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The next day, police released surveillance video showing a man and a woman in the area at the time Garrett was attacked, saying they wanted to speak with the pair.

All three — the suspects and the victim — live in the same neighborhood and near the scene of the crime, according to addresses provided by police.

Garrett was killed four hours after another teen was slain a block away, police said. Jamal Joseph, 18, died after he attacked in a sneaker store at 249 Utica Ave. just before 7 p.m. June 10. An arrest still has not been made in Joseph’s death.

Police did not release a motive for the slayings, but at the time said they were confident the two stabbings were not related.

NYPD had increased its patrols in certain areas just before the teens were killed as part of the department’s Summer All-Out program, meant to combat a rise in shootings and homicide. The deadly attacks against Garrett and Joseph happened in a precinct not included in the program.
