BUSHWICK, Brooklyn -- A woman was killed when a private sanitation truck ran over her and fled the scene Thursday night, officials said, asking for the public's help to find whoever was behind the wheel at the time.
Alberta Bagu, 46, was crossing Broadway near Ditmars Street when she was hit.
Surveillance video captured the crash just before 10:30 p.m. It showed Bagu crossing the street using her walker. She stepped in front of a private sanitation truck that was stopped. But then the truck moved forward and ran over her, crushing her body then leaving the scene.
According to neighbors, Bagu had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and had an injured leg. But that didn't stop her from doing errands and walking around the neighborhood.
"She was a beautiful lady who was quiet, minded her business. She also do shopping. I help her sometimes," neighbor Oswald Rivera said.
Hidie Jones works at a tattoo parlor across from the scene of the crash. She walked up right after it happened.
"It was a fatality, complete. Hopefully she didn't feel any pain or anything. Condolences to her family," Jones said.
Police are looking at the surveillance video that was captured by a nearby market. The NYPD is still looking for the driver. Anyone with information in the case is urged to call the department's anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
