LIRR train slams into car, possibly pushed onto tracks by vehicle behind it

RIVERHEAD, Long Island — A Long Island Rail Road train slammed into a car that may have been propelled onto the tracks in a rear-end collision Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The crash happened about 1 p.m. at the Mill Road crossing in Riverhead. It appears that a vehicle may have pushed the one in front of it into the path of the No. 206 Ronkonkoma Branch train , MTA officials said.

The agency, citing Stony Brook Medical Center, said two people were rushed from the scene to a hospital. One victim was in critical condition, while the other was in good condition. Their names have not been released.

Trains were delayed during but service has since resumed.
