SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A former Syracuse-area high school teacher has been found guilty of using a ruler to hit one of his former students dozens of times on the buttocks.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports a Cicero Town Court jury found 53-year-old Thomas R. McCarthy Jr. struck the 17-year-old girl 54 times for the purpose of gratifying his sexual desire.

McCarthy, a former social studies teacher at Liverpool High School, is also a lawyer. Prosecutors say the girl was attending the school when McCarthy cornered her in his law office in June 2013 and struck her with the ruler. McCarthy had hired the girl to work for him at his law office, located in his Liverpool home.

He faces up to a year in jail and will become a registered sex offender because of the victim’s age.
