Shipping container dislodges from tractor-trailer on Route 3 in Rutherford, killing 1

RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Police have reopened Route 3 after a tractor-trailer struck an overpass, knocking a shipping container onto a nearby car, killing the driver.

A large container from a shipping company fell onto a car at Ridge Road Monday afternoon around 2:20 p.m.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead.

Rutherford Police were on the scene as well as the Fatal Accident Investigation Unit.

On traffic cameras from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, cars could be seen at a standstill for miles.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
