Upstate New York man killed when Amtrak train slams his car

CHILI, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York man has been killed after the car he was driving was struck by an Amtrak train at a railroad crossing outside Rochester.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies say the victim ignored a crossing gate in the suburb of Chili, drove around the gate, and his vehicle was hit by a train just before 6 a.m. Monday.

Deputies say the man, believed to be in his 20s, was killed instantly.

Investigators say the victim was familiar with the area. It’s believed he was on his way to work at the time of the deadly collision.

Amtrak officials are at the scene investigating. Train and regular traffic are being re-routed around the crash site.
