LAKE GROVE, New York (PIX11) – Police arrested a naked Bay Shore man who was allegedly threatening shoppers with a machete Monday afternoon.

“Numerous witnesses” dialed 911 to report the nude man, later identified as 37-year-old Jose Amaya, waving a large blade in the Costco Parking lot at 3000 Middle Country Road in Lake Grove.

Police arrived around 1 p.m. to find Amaya barricaded inside the cab of the 2007 Freighliner tractor-trailer he had been driving for East Orange-based company NYC Transport.  Police say Amaya lived in the vehicle, inside of which they found a microwave and extra clothing.

“He was violent, he was unreasonable, he was waving around the machete,” said Sgt. Brian Michels.  “When he realized the officers weren’t going to let him out of the cab he started rolling the window down and pointing the machete at the officers.”

When he tried to escape through the open window, “The officers took a bold step, they were able to get up close to the suspect with the small amount that the window was down and they were able to deploy the Taser,” Michels said.

A “lengthy struggle” ensued inside the cab of the truck, and officers had to fire a Taser four times in order to pacify Amaya enough to make the arrest.  He is now being treated at Stony Brook University Hospital.

A 20-inch machete was recovered at the scene.

Amaya now faces charges of menacing a police officer, criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a weapon.

He is due in First District Court in Central Islip Tuesday.
