1 killed, 3 hurt at annual Mother’s Day bike blessing in Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) -- One person is dead and three people are injured after a shooting Sunday evening in Newark, authorities said.

According to the Essex County prosecutor, the shooting occurred at an annual Mother's Day bike blessing in the area of 19th Avenue and South 16th Street  at about 7:45 p.m.

Officials tell PIX11 News the event was just kicking off when shots rang out. The annual event marks the beginning of motorcycle season.

One person was taken to a hospital where they were pronounced dead, officials said. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

Three other victims are being treated for apparent non life-threatening injuries, the prosecutor's office said.

The shooting is the 29th homicide in Newark in 2015, officials said.

Police are investigating the shooting and ask for anyone with information to call 877-847-7432.
