State police say Beacon police officers pursued the unidentified suspect after he carjacked the vehicle at knifepoint at Memorial Park.

Police say the man abandoned the vehicle and was chased on foot through a wooded area and across the highway before being shot by police when he threatened them with a large knife.

It wasn't clear how many officers were involved.

A portion of the highway was closed for about six hours as authorities investigated the shooting, causing a two mile long traffic backup.
