American Pharoah wins 141st Kentucky Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (PIX11) — Favorite American Pharoah won the 141st Kentucky Derby Saturday evening in Louisville, Kentucky.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, American Pharoah won by one length, outracing Firing Lane to the finish line.

Eighteen 3-year-old horses competed in the 141st Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs.

Top contenders included Dortmund, Firing Line, Frosted and Carpe Diem, whose owners paid $1.6 million for him as a 2-year-old. The only horse costing more than a million dollars to win the race was Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000, whose owners paid $4 million for.

Churchill Downs saw a record crowd of 170,513 attendants.

The official time of the race was 2:03.02.
