(PIX11) -- Celebrity nutritionist Cynthia Sass revealed to PIX11 News Tuesday the affordable superfoods we should add to our grocery lists. Sass, who signed on as the sports nutrition consultant for the New York Yankees, lists the must-haves she calls “PULSES” in her new book "Slim Down Now: Shed Pounds and Inches With Real Food, Real Fast."

"Pulses" include lentils, peas, chickpeas, and many varieties of beans.

Lentils: $1.79
Yellow Split Peas: $1.29
ChickPeas: 89 cents per can
Black Beans: 99 cents per can

A daily serving of these protein-rich carbs helps you lose weight, inches and belly fat and they also are the keys to good health.

In addition to weight loss, “Pulses” have been scientifically proven to:
- lower heart disease
- increase breast cancer prevention
- reduce diabetes risk
- and reduce colon cancer risk
