SOUTH LOS ANGELES (PIX11) — A search is underway Sunday for “significant portions” of an infant’s dismembered body after remains were found near a home in South Los Angeles, officials said.

Children playing in the neighborhood before heading to church made the gruesome discovery of a baby’s leg, PIX11 News’ sister station KTLA reports. The baby’s head was later recovered, officials said.

Deputies were called shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday to the 1500 block of West 104th Street about a suspicious circumstance, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

When they arrived, a resident said they’d found what appeared to be human remains. The coroner’s office confirmed that the remains were that of an infant, 1 to 3 days old.

“The infant appears to have been dismembered,” the agency said. “Significant portions of the body are still missing.”

Investigators have asked for residents’ help in this heart-wrenching case. People living in the neighborhood are urged to look int heir yards and trash cans for any suspicious items. Officials believe it’s possible that the baby’s remains may have been scattered throughout the area.

Detectives would also like to speak with any females who were recently pregnant, are no longer pregnant and whose baby is absent.

Anyone with information is urged to call the LA County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
