Twenty years ago this month, Howard Thompson was hired by WPIX to host a new kind of segment: Help Me Howard.

The idea was to use the power of a TV station -- and a crusading investigative journalist with a big heart -- to get justice for people or communities facing problems they couldn't solve on their own.

In 20 years, Howard has made a huge difference in the lives of countless people who live in the tri-state area.

This segment is how it all began. The very first Help Me Howard aired at 10:30 p.m. May 16, 1995, during the Channel 11 News at 10. Kaity Tong introduces viewers to Howard and the concept of Help Me Howard. The rest, as they say, is history.
