NEW YORK (PIX11) - ESPN quickly benched Britt McHenry after a video showing the reporter belittling a parking lot attendant went viral after it appeared on LiveLeak.com.
"In an intense and stressful moment, I allowed my emotions to get the best of me and said some insulting and regrettable things," McHenry tweeted.
McHenry had been eating at a Chinese restaurant when her car was towed, according to her Twitter feed. While paying to get her vehicle out of the lot, surveillance cameras captured a nasty exchange.
The video shows McHenry lashing out at a female towing company employee who is off camera, saying, "I'm in the news sweetheart, I will f--king sue this place."
Even after the attendant points out that she's being recorded, McHenry starts personally attacking her looks, job and intelligence.
"That's why I have a degree and you don't . . . I wouldn't work at a scumbag place like this anyway," McHenry says, telling the woman she has "No education, no skill set," and asking her, "Do you feel good about your job? So I could be a college dropout and do the same thing? Why, because I have a brain and you don't?"
The clerk finally responds to the attacks by telling her, "Don't say that." McHenry smirks and adds, "Maybe if I was missing some teeth they would hire me, huh? Oh like yours cause they look so stunning (talking about the woman's teeth). Cause I'm on television and your in a fu**cking trailer honey. Lose some weight, baby girl."
ESPN has suspended McHenry for a week over the incident.
"As frustrated as I was, I should always choose to be respectful and take the high road," McHenry tweeted. "I am so sorry for my actions and will learn from this mistake."
