BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (PIX11) -- A California father is being held on $1 million bail after being caught on surveillance video punching his toddler son in the face inside of a supermarket.

In the disturbing video, Justin Whittington, 23, can be seen chasing the terrified little boy around Vest Market in Bakersfield. Whittington then punches the child in the face. The boy falls to the floor, crying, and Whittington drags him by an arm. The bawling child, holding his face, is eventually led out of the store by a woman who appears to be his pregnant mother.

"That was horrible, man. The worst thing I've ever seen," store owner Harry Drindal told the Daily News. An employee witnessed the savage act of child abuse and told Drindal to watch the surveillance video.

Whittington was arrested Friday morning and charged with child endangerment. The child was not seriously injured, the Daily News reports.

“You don’t hit a child like that," Drindal told the news.
