NEW JERSEY (PIX11) - A 21-year old Newark man claims he was robbed of $3,200 by rapper DMX early Sunday morning. The artist was scheduled to perform at a concert in Newark on Saturday night.

The victim says he spotted the rapper at an Exxon gas station on Rt. 21 in Newark. He says that DMX was traveling with a caravan of 4 Cadillac Escalades. He told police he spoke to DMX at the Exxon about rap music, before a member of his entourage flashed a gun and demanded cash. The Newark man claims he took $3,200 out of his pocket and DMX snatched it out of his hand and they took off.

DMX, whose legal name is Earl Simmons, has been in trouble with the law over a dozen times. He’s been locked up and arrested for driving and drug infractions, animal cruelty, resisting arrest and more.

“It’s not good for his reputation,” said a patron at the gas station on Monday, “You figure, with all his money, why would he do something like this?

People who represent the artist did not respond to a request for comment on Monday. Yesterday, the rapper tweeted out:  “Thank you Jersey! For real! Thank You!” after promoting concert in Newark  on Twitter.

Detectives were looking at surveillance video from the gas station on Monday. The alleged robbery victim told police he was able to follow the caravan of Escalades long enough to get a read of the license plate.
