GOODYEAR, Ariz. (KPHO/KTVK) — An Arizona man is suspected of stabbing his wife to death in front of at least one of their seven children, police in Goodyear said.

John Davis, 37, called 911 on March 26 regarding a family fight. Police arrived shortly after 6 p.m. to find Michelle Davis, 35, stabbed to death at their home near 167th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road, said Lisa Kutis, spokeswoman with the Goodyear Police Department.

Police said the couple’s daughter called 911 and frantically pleaded for help at the same time John Davis called 911 while crying hysterically and apologizing for killing his wife.

The daughter told police she saw her father stab her mother. All of the couple’s seven children, ages 3 to 15, were home at the time, police said.

John Davis allegedly took the knife to the kitchen and cleaned it before officers arrived, but stayed at the home until officers arrived and told them he’d lost his mind and stabbed his wife, police said

Kutis said John Davis was taken into custody without incident.

Michelle Davis was taken to a hospital, where she died of multiple stab wounds, Kutis said. Investigators said they found at least 13 stab wounds on her body.

A son told police John Davis became upset with him for playing video games and that his father struck him in the face. The child said he told his mother, who confronted her husband and an argument ensued, police said.

The children told investigators they saw their father chase their mother from the kitchen to the front door with a knife in his hand. Michelle Davis’ body was found by the front door, police said.

John Davis refused to speak with investigators after his arrest.

The Davis’ seven children were placed in the care of relatives, Kutis said. The children were not physically harmed.

Goodyear police said they’ve been called to the home before and John Davis has a lengthy criminal background involving violent domestic abuse.

Officers were called to the home in August 2013 for a verbal argument between the couple. Davis was arrested in 2008 in Utah for a domestic violence assault against Michelle Davis and child abuse. He was arrested in 2006 in Modesto, Calif., for battery against a spouse and inflicting corporal injury to a spouse. He was also arrested in 1997 and 1998 in Santa Rosa, Calif., on suspicion of battery against a former spouse.

John Davis is being held in the Maricopa County Jail on $2 million bond.
