EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (PIX11) -- Bags of clothes and goods line the basement of The Church of the Nativity for the dozens of families displaced from the East Village fire that destroyed three buildings.
A family member of one parishioner, Mildred Guy, set up a GoFundMe page after she lost everything in the fire. Generations of their family lived at the 45 E. 7th St. building on the corner of 2nd Avenue for nearly 50 years. Their belongings, along with memories now a pile of rubble after this past Thursday's explosion.
Mildred's story inspired other parishioners and community members to give back on a larger scale, donating goods to the Red Cross.
The Red Cross has helped more than 120 people since the explosion with financial and emotional assistance.AlertMe
