BAY SHORE, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Police in Suffolk County police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left an Amityville robbery suspect dead Sunday night.

Police were responding to a robbery call at Best Buy, located at 1851 West Sunrise Highway in Islip, at approximately 7:46 p.m. when a witness told the first officer on scene where the suspect was, according to a Suffolk County Police Department news release.

Authorities say the witness indicated that the robbery suspect, identified as Denzel Brown, was hiding outside the store. As the officer approached, the suspect fled through the parking lot before being ineffectively tasered by the officer, police said.

As Brown ran away, police said he tried to carjack a running car from a couple with two children, ages 4 and 6, sitting in the back.

While the couple screamed at Brown, the officer caught up with him and ordered him out of the vehicle, police said.

However, Brown allegedly began to drive away and the officer shot once at him, opened the car door and tried to remove him from the car.

During the altercation, the officer deployed a Taser, which again proved to be ineffective, police said.

The officer fired another gunshot, at which time assisting officers arrived and took Brown in to custody, according to police.

Brown, 21, of Amityville, was transported to a local hospital where he died during surgery.
