NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) – One person was killed and 2 others were injured during a shooting in Newark Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened just before 2 p.m. at 279 Clinton Place.

A law enforcement source says ShotSpotter detected multiple shots fired in the area.

The source says of the three people injured, two are in stable condition.

Police say the man who was killed is believed to be a gang member and was a target of a shooting last year, but didn't cooperate with investigators. Authorities believe Wednesday's shooting was related to last year's.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka released a statement that said in part, "...[E]ven one death in the City of Newark is too many, and today we have indeed had β€˜too many.’ Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victims of this terrible crime. The dedicated men and women of our Police Department, working with our law enforcement partners, will make every effort to bring the suspects in this incident to justice, and they will be held fully accountable."

Essex County homicide is investigating the incident.
