HEMPSTEAD (PIX11) — Police say a Hempstead father was out driving around under the influence of drugs and alcohol while his 8-year-old son was home alone.
Ruben Saravia, 36, of Elmont, was seen driving a 2011 BMW around 3:44 a.m. Monday, on North Franklin Street near Centre Street with a broken tail light. When police conducted a traffic stop, they noticed the driver had blood shot watery eyes, slurred speech and and odor of alcoholic beverage was detected on his breath. Police then found six white pills, believed to be hydrocodone, inside the vehicle.
After speaking to Saravia, they discovered he had left his 8-year-old son home alone. Police responded to the home and found the child unharmed. The child was released to the custody of a friend.
Defendant Saravia is being charged with DWI, criminal possession of a control substance, endangering the welfare of child, improper left turn and a defective tail light.
