HOUSTON (PIX11) — A woman once known as the “Half Ton Killer” accused of killing her nephew by rolling on him with her 1,000-pound frame has a new lease on life after clearing her name and losing hundreds of pounds.

In 2008, Mayra Rosales was charged with capital murder in the death of her two-year-old nephew. According to KTRK, she was then dubbed the “Half-Ton Killer.” Charges were later dropped when the investigation later revealed she only took the fall to protect her sister.

Since then, Rosales has made changes in her life for the better, dropping 800 pounds through surgeries and dieting. She says she still has 30 more to go but has a new mindset. Rosales gives credit to Houston vascular and bariatric surgeon and star of TLC’s “My 600-Pound Life” star Dr. Younan Nowzaraden.

“I think Mayra is very motivated,” Nowzaraden said.

Rosales has undergone 11 surgeries including a lap band procedure and skin removal surgeries.

“I feel like I am reborn, I feel alive, I really do,” Rosales told KTRK.

She has helped motivate others to lose weight and hopes others will find strength in her story.

“Do not lose hope and keep fighting because we only have one life, and it’s well worth fighting for it,” Rosales said.
