PORT RICHMOND, Staten Island (PIX11) -- Two people are accused of animal cruelty after police say they abandoned a dog in an unheated apartment on Staten Island.

Police say the 3-year-old pit bull Jay was found emaciated and locked in a bedroom for two weeks.

According to SIlive.com, 35-year-old Noel Galvin and 27-year-old Christina Pardee have been arrested and charged with misdemeanor counts of abandonment of animals and torturing and injuring animals. Galvin also allegedly told police he didn't give Jay water because he "didn't want the dog."

The defendants left Jay in Pardee's apartment when she moved into Galvin's home. Police learned about Jay when Pardee was arrested on Feb. 13.

Jay is currently in the custody of the ASPCA. A spokesperson for the ASPCA told SIlive that it's too soon to discuss adoption prospects for Jay because of the pending criminal case.
