CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (PIX11)-- One person was killed after a minivan smashed into a snowbank, causing the car to fly through the air and into a home Thursday evening.

According to WTVR, the homeowner was killed when the minivan went airborne into the kitchen, causing part of the house to collapse. Police say the car was traveling at a high speed before it veered off the road into the snow bank.

"We heard a revving engine, a big loud screech and a big crash," neighbor Jeff Duncan told WTVR. "We saw smoke coming out of the yard."

A neighbor who rushed in to help was shocked by what he saw.

"We saw half of the house was missing and there was a car in the backyard," said Jay Pettit. "Imagine just being in your home and something like this happens. It's a horrible thing."

Investigators say they don't know if the man was killed when he was struck by the van or when part of the home collapsed.

The driver and a passenger in the car were taken to area hospitals and treated for minor injuries. It's unknown if the driver will face charges.

Police have not revealed the identity of the victim.
