MIDDLESEX COUNTY, N.J. (PIX11) — A New Jersey highway pileup involving 15 or more vehicles including box trucks and a bus has left at least one person dead and several others injured.

The crash occurred Monday night during a mix of rain and snow flurries and below-freezing temperatures on the New Jersey Turnpike in Cranbury, a township just southwest of New York City.

New Jersey State Police confirm at least 15 vehicles — including four tractor-trailers, two box trucks, a fully loaded bus and multiple cars — were involved in the crash near Exit 8.

The agency that manages the turnpike said a tractor-trailer jackknifed on the roadway near a service area.

All lanes southbound were blocked because of the pileup, but by the Tuesday morning commute, traffic was trickling through the car lanes as the crash clean up continued. Truck lanes remained closed between exits 8 and 9 as of 6 a.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
