BAYONNE, New Jersey (PIX11) - Two people were found dead in a Bayonne home on Tuesday morning, according to police.
Police and firefighters found the bodies of Melanie Polito, 35, and her daughter, Ashley Baez, 19, inside the West 10th Street home. According to authorities, drug paraphernalia was present, but their cause of death has not been determined.
"Yesterday I saw them. Very happy," said a neighbor who lives right next door. She did not give her name. "I saw her boyfriend shovel the snow this morning, looking normal, and I don't know what happened an hour later."
Executive Assistant Hudson County prosecutor Gene Rubino said the boyfriend discovered Polito on the living room couch around 11 a.m., after he finished shoveling, the Jersey Journal reports.
Police, ambulances, fire trucks and county investigators all responded to the home, which is located at 14 West 10th Street. Neighbors say they spoke to a second, surviving daughter who was not home at the time, but who was outside the house talking with police after she got the bad news.
"She was in shock. She said oh my god what am I going to do with my sister's baby? I'm only 18 years old," said the neighbor next door, "We said we would help her."
She said the daughter who died has a toddler, a little boy. A neighbor that lives directly across the street said she had health problems, and that he's seen ambulances and police at the house before.
"They took her to the hospital a couple times," said neighbor Paul Jancula.
Neighbors also say the mother had a boyfriend. A man whose car was parked in the driveway at the multi-family home declined to comment on the sudden deaths.
Investigators at the scene were not answering any questions. The Bayonne Police Department deferred all questions to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. The Prosecutor's Office was closed today, and no one could be reached for any immediate comment.
