WINSLOW TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A police officer has shot and killed an armed man following what authorities say was a domestic dispute in southern New Jersey.

Camden County prosecutors say 59-year-old William Campbell was fatally shot Sunday morning by an officer responding to a report of a woman being held at gunpoint by a relative in the 300 block of New Brooklyn Road.

They say a woman ran up to the officer’s cruiser and tried to get inside, screaming about a man with a gun, and the officer saw Campbell approaching him while raising a handgun.

One shot was fired. Campbell was dead at the scene and his firearm was recovered. The officer, who wasn’t identified, wasn’t injured. The 18-year department veteran has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is being conducted.
