Several families displaced after 3-alarm fire in Washington Heights apartment

WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, Manhattan (PIX11) -- Several families were displaced after a 3-alarm fire ripped through a Washington Heights apartment Saturday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 3 p.m., at 501 W. 179th St. in Washington Heights on the fifth floor and expanded to the roof.

Residents were evacuated as firefighters battled the blaze.

Firefighters had the fire under control an hour later after it grew to 3-alarms.

According to the Red Cross, 11 adults and six children were displaced.

It's unknown what caused the fire.
