Two teens — ages 14 and 15 — arrested in Queens gunpoint robbery, assault

ELMHURST, Queens (PIX11) — Two teen boys have been arrested in the robbery and assault of a Queens shop owner and his wife, according to police.

Police said the suspects, 14-year-old Ronald Espinoza and 15-year-old Alex Diaz, were both armed with guns when they walked into JC Electronics on Grand Avenue in Elmhurst at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Diaz allegedly went behind the counter and began struggling with the 38-year-old shop owner. Diaz and Espinoza then allegedly began hitting the owner over the head with their guns and attempted to cut him with a knife, police said. The man’s wife was also assaulted when she tried to intervene.

The owner’s daughter, who fled to the basement of the store and called 911.

The pair is suspected of taking cash and cellphones, police said. The boys fled the store toward the subway station at 53rd Street and Queens Boulevard, as the owner chased after them.

A passerby pointed responding officers in the direction of the teens, and Diaz and Espinoza were apprehended in the subway station. Police said officers found three guns and stolen property was recovered.

The owner and his wife were treated at a hospital for lacerations to their heads and faces and released.

Diaz and Espinoza face charges of robbery, assault, criminal use of a firearm, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a weapon.
