WASHINGTON HEIGHTS (PIX11) – A woman was ambushed Christmas Day by an attacker who beat her with a beer bottle in front of a correctional facility in Manhattan, police said Tuesday as they called for the public’s help to find the culprit.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Dec. 25, a 45-year-old woman was grabbed from behind by an attacker as she walked in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, according to NYPD.

She broke free and ran away, but the culprit trailed her, grabbed her again and continued his assault.

It happened in front of the minimum-security, all-male Edgecombe Correctional Facility, located at 611 Edgecombe Ave.

Police said the attacker struck the woman multiple times in the head with a beer bottle. She was taken to a hospital with cuts, swelling and bruising to her head, and listed in stable condition.

The attack was caught on camera. Police released footage Tuesday showing the culprit, described as a Hispanic male in his 40s, about 6 feet 1 inch tall and 220 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair.

He was last seen wearing black boots, a black jacket and black jeans.

A video of the suspect is attached and available at DCPI.

Anyone who recognizes the attacker or has information in the case is urged to call NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
